Diane Kruger In A Sheer Dress: Chic Or Shriek?

The German-born actress attended the Sidaction Gala Dinner in Paris on Thursday night, posing in an eye-catching dress made of icy blue tulle. The cut, with conservative three-quarter sleeves and a high, rounded neckline, was plain enough; the lining beneath her floor-length skirt, however, stopped at the top of the thigh, leaving her legs exposed beneath the completely sheer skirt.
The look was bold, inviting of critique... in other words, a classic Kruger look. The "Inglorious Basterds" actress is a darling of the fashion set and a frequent front row denizen precisely because she will wear the high-fashion looks (tiered Chanel at the 2010 Oscars, fuchsia Christian Lacroix at the 2010 Golden Globes) that others wouldn't dare.Miranda Kerr: Sexy in White Dresses.Lately, at the couture shows in Paris, Diane has opted for simple dresses, black and white in safe cuts. So we're thrilled to see her back in fashion that gets us talking.
You would think that the ruinous Kamuzu Banda dictatorship was enough to last a lifetime. The ban on women wearing trousers was lifted in 1998 but some crooks appear hell-bent on bringing it back through the back door. There is a simple solution to this pseudo-morality: If you don't like what women wear, look the other way. If you like what you see, ask nicely. When confronted with young men wearing those trousers so popular these days--the ones that leave you wondering how they manage to stay up--women carefully look the other way and hurry past.
They slow down or cross the road when grown men who should know better choose to pee on the roadside in broad daylight. It would appear that the bogus purists were having trouble with street sales after the authorities got on their case. Rules and regulations can be a pain in the backside, but why make women the butt of their frustration when they are often not even at the centre of power in the first place? The Malawi story ends on a high note, mercifully. In the days following the attacks, the strippers were roundly condemned--all the way from State House to the streets and even on holy ground. Fifteen suspects are reportedly up against the law in Lilongwe and the drums of war were being beaten by clergymen at rallies and women's rights organisations.
According to the police public relations officer for the central region, the suspects will be charged with theft and breach of the peace--and the police will be going all out for jail terms rather than fines. In the meantime, police are out in the streets in full force providing security for women. The question is: For how long?

Political dress involves a certain degree of strategic formula

For formal appearances, the dark suit, plain tie and American flag pin are common visual cues that have become instantly recognizable as presidential. Over time they've also become expected of candidates. But sometimes a candidate might be helped by veering from the expected."If there is anyone who could possibly benefit from changing up his look it's probably Gov. Rick Perry," Kirwin said. "If he got a bit more cowboy, not so formal, and tried to say 'All these other guys with their stiff shirts and suits are Washington insiders and I'm a real guy from Texas,' it could help him."
Still, when bold patterns and colors can turn people off, experimenting during a campaign can be risky business. Political dress involves a certain degree of strategic formula, but sprucing up the look of a politician is doable, without alienating the public. We asked a few style experts how they might update the candidates' campaign wardrobes. Celebrity stylist and costume designer Jennifer Rade suggests mixing up the candidates' looks with small details, such as wearing a flat-front pant as opposed to a pleated front, a double vented jacket, possibly a check-pattern shirt with a striped tie or a cool watch.
"I don't think they give the population at large enough credit to know that we are OK if you show up and you have more colors in your repertoire than just gray, navy and red," Rade said.Menswear consultant and stylist Michael Macko also believes the candidates can dress up their looks with subtle details. He suggests a simple white pressed cotton pocket square or a navy on white Bengal stripe shirt with a tie, but stressed the biggest improvement the candidates can make is investing in a tailor.
"The error a lot of men make is that they don't have the suit tailored for them," Macko said. "If the suit is properly fitted, you'll see about an inch of cuff of shirt sleeve through a suit."Stylist Vincent Boucher also believes tailoring is important, for a politician or for any man's image. He suggests a gutsier, robustly striped tie for Romney to show his strength and aggressiveness as a candidate, but he noted the importance of staying subtle if the candidate wants to win over the American electorate."In Europe, a pocket square would be no problem, but in the U.S. that sort of signifies maybe (being) a little too costumey," Boucher said.
Boucher added that Ron Paul's seeming lack of attention to his clothing and resemblance to a college professor might actually work for his campaign. "It feeds into that sort of professorial authenticity that he kind of somehow is trying to cultivate," Boucher said. "Like if you put him in spiffier garb, it's not what people are looking for from him."

Unforgettable Dresses book deconstructs history’s enduring frocks

The Golden Globes on Sunday night will kick off awards season, and as usual the morning-after chatter in offices and talk shows won’t be about which actress won an award — it will be about what she was wearing.Chances are, you may not remember who won an award but you’ll remember a spectacular dress and who wore it. Who can forget Julia Roberts at the 2001 Oscars in that black Valentino gown with white stripes? Or Halle Berry at the 2002 Oscars wearing the Elie Saab satin and floral embroidered sheer gown?
That’s the power of a single dress. It can leave a searing imprint on our memory. A lush new coffee-table book, 100 Unforgettable Dresses by Hal Rubenstein, the fashion director of InStyle, offers a look at famous dresses that mesmerized the world. Part history lesson, with interviews with the designers and dollops of insider gossip on how these dresses became imprinted in pop culture, the book chronicles dresses not just from the red carpets but also from the worlds of comedy, music, film, royalty and fashion.
“Every single dress in the book has a story. There are prettier dresses that are not in the book but if it didn’t have a story, I wasn’t interested,” said Rubenstein on the phone from New York. “These are dresses that affect us collectively as a society in terms of how we dress, how we look at beauty and how certain dresses made certain individuals stars.” Take the first image in the book. Back in 1994, Elizabeth Hurley was known only as Hugh Grant’s girlfriend until she stepped out on the red carpet on his arm for the London premier of his film Four Weddings and a Funeral dressed in a Gianni Versace gown strategically held together by gold safety pins. Rubenstein describes how thereafter the gown and Hurly were “inseparable, incredible, combustible, derisible and ultimately globally inescapable.”
But while a single dress can take someone from the sidelines to stardom, the formula is not one that is simple or straightforward. For a dress to become unforgettable, there must be a confluence of several factors.“Calvin Klein told me it has to be the right dress on the right woman at the right time,” says Rubenstein. “Look at the dress Halle Berry wore — if Reese Witherspoon had worn that, it would not have the same effect.”Also some dresses might have had a public outing or two before it landed on the woman who gave it iconic status.
Remember that green palm froid sheer Versace gown with navel-plunging neckline that Jennifer Lopez wore to the 2000 Grammys? It had been strutted down the runway on supermodel Amber Valleta to virtually no fanfare. Even the designer Donatella Versace wore the dress and no one batted an eyelash.

Owning a home-based business can be rewarding and challenging

Owners of three local businesses – a health product distributor, advertising specialty firm, and custom fitted dress company -- are entrepreneurs discovering the joys -- and a few challenges – in owning a home-based business.Their businesses are widely different but they all offer a flexible working schedule, the opportunity to earn a living during a tough job market, and a chance to try something new.A piece of the piePam Roberts sells a wide variety of promotional products through her Auburndale-based company Impressive Advertising Specialties, LLC, but she sees it more as being in the relationship building business.
The company offers a wide variety of products including business cards, wedding invitations, car magnets, banners, hats and visors, pens and pencils, and water bottles.A Wedding Industry Grows, Slowly, in Harlem. But she sells more T-shirts than anything. While items have been shipped to Texas and Switzerland, most of the company's business is local. Plumbing companies purchase embroidered shirts; schools order tee shirts for graduation classes and groups like elementary school patrols. Organizations request magnets and other items for fundraisers.
Roberts, 50, worked in a pharmaceutical factory for years before devoting time to purchasing houses, fixing them up, and selling them for profit. When the economy put a halt to redoing houses, she took a leap of faith and purchased a promotional items business package found during a trip to a home show. She and her husband, Kevin Roberts, who worked for Watkins Motor Lines at the time, attended training in Idaho and learned the ins and outs of the business -- how to print shirts, use a vinyl cutter, set up supplies, and organized invoices.
Pam Roberts basically ran the business until her husband lost his job a year or so ago. Recently they made him business cards and he now handles much of the shirt embroidery and printing. The space devoted to the business, located just off their kitchen, includes a computer and printer, screen printer, vinyl cutter, and embroidery machine. Shelves are lined with samples of personalized bags, Frisbees, caps and visors, and T-shirts. The laundry room doubles as a stock room and holds storage bins filled with merchandise: pens, invitations, water bottles, bandanas, books, and stress balls. The bulk of Pam Roberts's time is devoted to marketing, which she refers to as building relationships. Many of her customers developed through the network. She and her husband also attend special events and trade shows with plenty of give-away items and posts information and product photos on Facebook.

A Wedding Industry Grows, Slowly, in Harlem

From traditional white dresses to gold, green and everything in between, the fashion show at Alhambra Ballroom’s Bridal Expo had something for everyone. Audience members gasped simultaneously at a halter-style African print wedding dress. The patchwork fabric, similar to a quilt, fused black, gold and a rich blue.“We don’t always have to wear white, ladies; custom Afro-centric designs are in,” wedding coordinator DiAnne Henderson told the brides-to-be, their families and friends. This year’s expo, at the Alhambra on Adam Clayton Powell Boulevard and 125th Street, drew 25 vendors and about 100 guests.
DJ Mario came equipped with a turntable, music and a fitness trainer. As he blared First Choice’s “Love Thang” from the speakers, the trainer led women in the Wobble, then the Cha Cha slide — both popular line dances at African-American weddings.“Dancing is a great way to lose a couple of pounds before the big day, ladies,” Henderson said as she encouraged everyone to join in. “We are Harlemites, we are in Harlem.Great Formal Dress Styles for Different Occasions at Bargain Prices. This is how we get down!”The U.S. wedding industry generates about $40 billion a year. According to the 2011 American Wedding Survey, the average wedding in the United States costs about $26,500. A 2011 survey by the bridal website The Knot found that in Manhattan, the average cost jumps to $70,730.
Uptown entrepreneurs are working to grow a Harlem wedding industry. In 2006, Amber Saunders-Nobles started A’Marie Weddings, a wedding planning service. She’s seen her clientele incorporate people of different races and financial backgrounds. “The biggest wedding I’ve done in Harlem was around $60,000,” she said. “We did the reception on a cruise around city.”Henderson believes Harlem has the potential to thrive in the city’s wedding industry. “Harlem is often overlooked as a destination to have a city wedding,” she said. She helped launch the Bridal Expo and Fashion Show four years ago to spotlight local vendors and help uptown brides make their wedding dreams come true.
Prints have just got louder and bolder this season and will continue to shine this year as well. Be it sweet fruity ones to funky psychedelic prints, they are all-pervasive this season. Mixing prints is going to be another cool way of expression this season. Digital prints on saris, lehengas and other ensemble will also be in vogue.Big, bold and chunky pieces will dominate the accessories market this year and jewellery will be all about classic pieces for the spring and natural pieces for the fall collection. Some of the "must have" pieces will be choker necklaces and big and bold rings with a mix of vintage and contemporary flair.
